Licensure compacts
Updated Nov 4, 2026Clinician review pending
A compact is an agreement between states. It can let you work in other member states without a full new license.
In short
Nurses (NLC)
If your main home is in an NLC state, you can hold a multistate license. It lets you work in the other member states.[1] Your home state is where you legally live, not where you work.[1] If you move your legal home to another compact state, you must apply for a license there within 60 days.[1]
Not members: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, New York and Oregon. Massachusetts has joined but isn't in effect yet.[1]
Physical therapy
Occupational therapy
The OT Compact is new. 36 states have joined, but you can only apply in states that are accepting applications.[3] As of November 2026 these are Arkansas, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.[3] The compact fee is $75 plus the state's fee.[3]
